SureSmile aligners<\/a> were designed to be more discreet, easier, and more comfortable than traditional braces. But even despite these improvements, it\u2019s not uncommon to experience some discomfort, especially when advancing to a new set of trays. Thankfully, this is temporary and typically very mild. However, should you require a little relief, here are a few tips and tricks for easing the pain and staying on track with SureSmile!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Eat A Soft Diet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sore teeth can make everyday activities like chewing very painful. Thus, stick to a soft diet while you\u2019re experiencing any aligner discomfort. Avoid foods that are hard or very sticky, and opt instead for nutritious, filling options such as scrambled eggs, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, yogurt and hummus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try a Cold Compress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hold a cold compress over the sore side of your mouth for up to 20 minutes at a time. This will not only numb some of the pain, but it will also help reduce swelling without causing tooth sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wax On<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While you don\u2019t have to deal with wires and brackets like you would with traditional braces, your SureSmile aligners may occasionally irritate your gums. If this happens, don\u2019t try to fix it yourself.  Your dentist is qualified to make adjustments without damaging your aligner, so reach out as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can apply a small amount of dental wax to the uncomfortable area to protect your gums and soft tissues temporarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep it Clean<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most important ways to ensure a successful treatment with SureSmile is to keep your teeth and aligners clean. Be sure to remove your trays to eat and drink anything besides water, and brush and floss your teeth before returning them to your mouth. This will not only help keep your trays looking clear, but it will also protect your smile from painful cavities and gum disease!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try an Over-The-Counter Pain Reliever<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Though aligner discomfort is typically very mild, on occasion you may require some extra help eliminating it. An OTC pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen is usually enough to provide temporary but satisfying relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t Give Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While it may seem like a good idea to take off your aligners when your teeth hurt, remember that in order for your treatment to be successful, you need to wear them for at least 22 hours a day. If it\u2019s time to advance to a new set, try to do it at bedtime, so you\u2019ll sleep through the most uncomfortable hours. Failing to wear your aligners as prescribed can delay your progress and even cause your treatment to take longer than anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
